Benagil Caves: The Hidden Beach

Sometimes we feel the fresh air when we see the blue ocean meets the blue sky on the horizon, and the looks make you feel love with it for eternity.

A similar view was achieved in my trip to Portugal, especially my unexpected trip to Portimao, which was never planned.

On May 11th, 2024, after an adrenaline rush from skydiving at Skydive Algarve, I was a bit confused about what to do as the whole day was left and my return bus to Lisbon was at midnight. So I started my Google search to check nearby. First, I tried for Alvor beach as suggested by the Skydive Algarve team, but I didn’t find any connectivity, nor is my Uber getting connected due to some card issue.

So I stood still, closed my eyes, and thought silently “WHAT TO DO NEXT?”

Suddenly a name reminded me of what I had just seen in some pictures, “Benagil Caves”. The natural caves within the mountains at the coast of Portimao. So I started searching for a bus route towards Benagil caves. So I found one link, for which I must reach Portimao first.

The sun was scorching hot, and waiting for the bus to Portimao (the main city near the caves) seemed like forever. Finally, with the support of an employee of the Skydive Algarve team, I got a bus to Portimao City.

As I stepped into the city, I checked Google and found that the bus for Benagil Cave would be after 90 minutes. So with lots of sadness, I started my journey to just explore the ocean water bank, which gave me a good feel and an expectation of a happier time in the upcoming hours.

My initial plan was to just travel via bus to Benagil caves and spend some time there exploring the beauty. But I was unaware of the cruise facility available here to Benagil caves too.

I was just walking on the banks, suddenly from far away I saw a poster written Benagil cave cruise and the price of 35 Euros. So I ran towards it and asked the guy for ride details. The ride was after 35 minutes, so I quickly booked one and the happiness was top-notch within me, as it was like a dream come true.

Now it was just 35 minutes I had to spend a very small wait from a writing perspective but standing with waiting was like a hell lot of time.

Setting Sail for Benagil! (2 PM)

With a ticket clutched in my hand (yay!), I eagerly boarded the boat at 2 PM. The excitement was buzzing! As we cruised along the Algarve coastline, I was surrounded by a breathtaking panorama. Picture this: smaller hills lined the coast, each with their own little caves peeking out. It felt like sailing into a secret world!

The Beauty Builds Up (As We Do!)

The closer we got to Benagil, the more magical the scenery became. The crystal-clear Atlantic Ocean sparkled like a million diamonds. The air grew cooler and fresher, carrying the salty scent of the sea. It was pure bliss!

The Grand Reveal: Benagil Caves (Around 3 PM)

And then, there it was! The majestic Benagil Caves emerged from the coastline, and I was speechless. The sight was truly awe-inspiring. The main cave boasted a giant hole in its roof, allowing sunlight to stream in and illuminate the interior. It was like a natural cathedral bathed in golden light!

A Million Years in the Making

These caves weren’t just beautiful; they whispered stories of the past. Millions of years of erosion by wind and waves carved these incredible formations. It’s mind-blowing to think that nature can create such artistic wonders!

Exploring the Caves (3 PM to 4 PM)

Our boat tour allowed us to get nice and close to the caves, offering incredible photo opportunities. Some people even went for a swim inside the caves – an experience I’ll definitely try next time!

Soaking Up the Beauty (4 PM to 5 PM)

As the sun began its descent, painting the sky with fiery hues, we started our journey back. The return trip was filled with a different kind of magic – a sense of peace and tranquility.

The End of an Unforgettable Adventure (5 PM)

By 5 PM, we were back at the port, our hearts brimming with memories. The Benagil Caves weren’t just a sight to see; they were an experience that will stay with me forever.
